This Saturday is the final stakes day of the Hawthorne meet, and two-year-olds take the spotlight once again. As always, Chicago Railbird is there.
Saturday’s card features two 1 1/16 mile races for Illinois-bred two-year-olds: the Pat Whitworth Illinois Debutante for the fillies, and the Jim Edgar Illinois Futurity for the colts and geldings. In a flip-flop from the sprint stakes three weeks ago, it was the fillies’ race that drew a bit shorter, and the colts’ and geldings’ race that drew an enormous field. In both cases, it is a puzzle waiting to be solved; most of the horses have never done two turns before, and most of the ones who have have only tried route distances on dirt. Particularly in the Jim Edgar, there are some chances for some nice prices.
