Chicago Railbird: 3.28.15

Today, the stakes season begins at Hawthorne.  The stakes roster this spring contains the same eight races as in 2014, but the races are spread over four different weekends instead of just two like last year.

Today’s card at 35th and Cicero features a pair of sprint handicaps for older state-bred sprinters: the Robert S. Molaro for Illinois-breds four and older, and the Third Chance for the fillies and mares.  Both races run at six furlongs on dirt.  The “handicap” portion is nothing so onerous as Work All Week’s 130 in the Addison Cammack at Arlington last year, and the highweights are both deserving favourites.  However, they are not invincible, and there are solid arguments for beating each of them.

I take a look at both of these races in this weekend’s Chicago Railbird, so head on over to ShapperDaCapper and get ready for the stakes season at Hawthorne!
