Chicago Race of the Day: Friday, September 4

For Friday at Arlington Park, we move on to look at another two-year-old race: the fourth race of the day is an open maiden special weight at five furlongs on the turf. One of the runners is the first foal out of a mare I really enjoyed, who is closely related to one of my favourite horses I’ve ever seen run. Episode 143 tries to make some sense of shippers, delve through some pedigrees, and figure out who’s ready to fire!

And, if you’re in the mood for an earworm? I mentioned in the show that one of the horses in this race is named Kennesaw, and I will never be able to think of him without thinking of “Kenesaw Mountain Landis”, a patently silly and wonderful song by Jonathan Coulton. It’s a catchy tall tale that’s loosely inspired by the Black Sox scandal. (Heads up, there is some NSFW language in the opening line, but it’s silly and catchy and great to listen to as long as there aren’t kids or bosses or customers floating around nearby.)
