Picks and Ponderings: 2017 Indiana Derby and Indiana Oaks Preview

This Saturday is Indiana Grand’s biggest day of Thoroughbred racing.  The day’s card features a pair of competitive Grade 3 stakes for the three-year-old set.  Eleven horses have entered to vie for a $500,000 Indiana Derby; eight fillies will contend for a $200,000 purse in the Indiana Oaks.  The fields feature the combinations that make the midseason Derbies so interesting: those familiar Classic contenders from the spring clash with later bloomers who hope to make their mark as their sophomore year progresses.

the highlight of my trip to Indiana

This Saturday, I visited Indiana Grand for the first time, for the Indiana Derby.  It was a frenetic day: Paul and I went up there that afternoon, covered the night card, and made the overnight run back to Chicago.  I’m still recovering from the lack of sleep on Sunday night, but it was more than worth going.  The people were friendly — and in a lot of cases even familiar, since there were so many Chicago horses and connections who made the trip for Indiana’s biggest Throughbred race day.

Though so much of the ink was spilled on the day’s graded events, it was one of the races earlier in the day that made Saturday a day to remember forever.

Picks and Ponderings: Indiana Derby Day Recap

Yesterday was Indiana Derby Day, the marquee evening of the Indiana Grand meet.  The card featured six stakes races, including a pair of Grade II events, and Picks and Ponderings was there.

In addition to horses shipping in from all over the country, there was plenty to follow for fans of the Chicago circuit.  The field in the Indiana General Assembly Distaff Stakes was full of Illinois-breds, and one of them took home the top prize.  Another bred in the Land of Lincoln invaded the superfecta in the Indiana Derby as one of the longest shots on the board.

Head over to Picks and Ponderings, and catch up on all the stakes action from yesterday at Indiana Grand!

Indiana Derby Day Picks and Analysis

Today is Indiana Derby Day!

To celebrate, I’m changing things up a bit here at Blinkers Off.  We will be back to our usual Arlington programming soon…but today, my full-card attention goes along with me to Shelbyville.  It is a full ten-race night card full of solid and contentious racing: six stakes races, two allowances, and two maiden special weights.

(And, for fellow fans of Curlin babies?  Unlike with most Chicago-area cards, there are a few scattered throughout this one!)

Without further ado, let’s dive into tonight’s racing at Indiana Grand!

Chicago Railbird: Indiana Derby Edition

This weekend, I’m doing something a little different at Chicago Railbird.

Since I’ll be out at Indiana Grand, I discussed the Grade II Indiana Derby.  There is a bit of a Chicago connection, as Illinois-bred Whateverybodywants was a maiden winner earlier this Arlington meet, and followed that up with a stakes win at Prairie Meadows.  I would love to see him win…although, spoiler alert, I am looking elsewhere for my picks and my longshots.

Find out who I do like in the Indiana Derby — and why — over at ShapperDaCapper, in my latest edition of Chicago Railbird!

hitting the road!

This weekend, Paul and I are taking a road trip.  Unlike our frequent figurative use of the term, this weekend it’s for real: we are going to Indiana for the Indiana Derby (GII)!

Over at Picks and Ponderings, we have full previews of the pair of graded stakes on the card, as well as our selections for all six stakes races on the undercard.  If you have questions about how we landed in particular races, leave us a comment or send us a tweet at @picksponderings.

On race day, we’ll be at Indiana Grand.  It’s a night card, so follow us through the evening on Twitter, or come say hi to us if you’re going to be at the track!

Picks and Ponderings: Indiana Derby and Oaks Preview

This Saturday night is Indiana Grand’s marquee race program: the Indiana Derby (GII) and the Indiana Oaks (GII).  Over at Picks and Ponderings, I take a look at both of these races.  The Indiana Oaks is particularly intriguing: it drew a field of eleven runners, and my top selection is a healthy 20/1 on the morning line.  The Indiana Derby has three pretty clear top contenders, though there are some longer shots who stand to invade the trifecta.

My full analysis of both races is online at Picks and Ponderings.  Go take a look, and let me know what you think in the comments!
